How can AI enhance the creative process?
Today, there are many AI-based tools designed to enhance the creative process. However, designers encounter certain issues such as: interface generations that do not produce concrete and usable results because they offer solutions in PNG or JPEG and therefore cannot be exploited by developers. The demonstrations presented often require hours of design work beforehand, so the tool allows us to see what it might look like but not to understand why it looks that way. The vector image generation tools do not maintain the same styles across multiple images.
Fortunately, we now have AI tools that produce reliable results, even though they do not replace designers (which is great for us!). AI assists us but does not surpass us and will not function without us. Here are a few use cases where AI could help improve your design process.
LLMs – ChatGPT or Bard
With these AIs, it is easy to get comprehensive answers on complex topics. They have about 95% accuracy on specific subjects and allow for quick debriefing in a few minutes. You can ask questions like, for example, How to work on interface design at in-store kiosks? This helps in gaining an initial understanding of a topic and offers different perspectives without the need for time-consuming research. However, it remains important to verify the information provided, as they are more helpful in general understanding rather than on very specific subjects.
Tools for UX Writing – ChatGPT or Bard
They enable reformulating, finding synonyms, different phrasing, or even rewriting text more simply to make it more understandable. You can also generate placeholder content (dummy titles or content) to create more credible and concrete interfaces. It is important to use them in the following way: request to generate text in such a context, for such an audience, and write 10 different ways to say it.
Image Editing – Photoshop
The application has developed a feature called auto-fill. It allows adding/replacing elements in a photo, for example, extending the background or adding elements, in just a few seconds! Although sending it into production may be challenging, it allows for faster visual editing.
User Click Prediction – Attention Insight
This AI is a plugin in Figma that uses a designed interface to predict where user attention will focus via a heat map. It gives an idea of how information hierarchy and visual hierarchy will impact our users, thus providing a metric we can work on.
A Brainstorming Assistant – Mistral AI's Chat (beta)
This chat is a French alternative to ChatGPT. It has the ability to generate quality responses quickly. It's used in the following way: I've thought of such a topic, can you generate 10 alternatives or similar ideas? Therefore, this assistant is a great partner offering uninhibited ideas on which we can build. The goal is to spark new ideas to create novel intersections.
You are now equipped to work faster and more efficiently thanks to artificial intelligence. Knowing that this is a rapidly growing field, there will be more and more AI-based tools helping us improve our creative process.
