What is digital eco-design?
Christophe Clouzeau is a key figure in digital eco-design. He has been working for several years at Temezis and represents his company's eco-design unit. I have transcribed an interview with him from the Parlons Design YouTube channel, which is a podcast show focusing on professions related to UX design.
According to Christophe, eco-design is a highly current topic. He begins by discussing an observation he made in the 2000s that prompted him to specialize in this field. Indeed, at that time, companies were beginning to ask questions about the impact of digital technology on the environment. They wanted to adopt a sustainable development policy and limit their printing for communication, however, they reversed this decision upon realizing that print was still useful to them. Although this approach was topical, there was little hindsight and data. Thus, the interviewee asked the following question: How to integrate eco-design into the digital creation process?
According to him, it would involve aligning a UX perspective with the environmental impact of a product. We then speak of green UX centered on users but also planet-centric, thus taking into account the impact of what we are going to produce on the environment without losing the user experience and still meeting user needs.
The RGESN was created, becoming the first general reference framework for digital eco-design. This guide is accessible to everyone with key elements and provides initial advice on eco-design. Not only is the market ready, but the law is also evolving in this direction. Since many criteria are provided, it is a process of continuous improvement because the process is long.
The RGESN reference framework is presented with themes classified by design professions (UX, front-end, content, etc.). Other resources also exist, such as the complementary eco-design guide, which goes further into the operational side, or governance organization reference frameworks focusing more on management, such as the GR491.
The goal is to try step by step and improve through practice while engaging the different professional bodies within the company. It is then simply a matter of finding the guide that corresponds to our profession and getting started.
